Renowned oncologist to lead the prestigious academic health system into a new era of innovation and excellence

NYU Langone Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Alec Kimmelman as its next chief executive officer and dean of New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, following an extensive nationwide search. Kimmelman, a distinguished researcher and leader in molecular oncology, will officially assume his new role on September 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. Robert Grossman, who is retiring after 18 years of transformative leadership.

A New Era of Leadership

Dr. Kimmelman has served as the director of NYU Langone’s Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center since 2023. Expressing his gratitude for the new appointment, he stated, “I am humbled and excited to be the next CEO and Dean of NYU Langone and appreciate the confidence the Board of Trustees and the search committee have placed in me.”

The decision was praised by Kenneth Langone, board chairman and co-chair of the search committee. “We are excited to name Dr. Kimmelman to this position given his extraordinary talent, leadership experience, and strong character,” said Langone, a billionaire philanthropist and co-founder of Home Depot.

Fiona Druckenmiller, incoming board chair, also welcomed Kimmelman, emphasizing her enthusiasm for working alongside him. “Ken and Dr. Grossman shared a bold vision and an amazing partnership that made NYU Langone what it is today. I am excited to cultivate a similar working relationship with Dr. Kimmelman,” she remarked.

Building on a Legacy of Excellence

Dr. Grossman, who oversaw NYU Langone’s evolution from a regional hospital into a nationally acclaimed academic healthcare system with annual revenues of $14.2 billion, commended his successor’s expertise. “Throughout his career at NYU Langone, most recently leading Perlmutter Cancer Center, Dr. Kimmelman has further established our integrated academic health system as a leader in research and treatment,” he stated.

Under Grossman’s leadership, NYU Langone expanded significantly, recently opening a hospital in Suffolk County and laying the groundwork for a state-of-the-art outpatient center in West Palm Beach, Florida. However, a proposed $3 billion medical center at Nassau Community College was put on hold indefinitely due to external challenges.

A Nationally Recognized Institution

NYU Langone continues to earn top rankings in healthcare. It has been recognized as the No. 1 academic medical center by Vizient, Inc. for three consecutive years. In the 2024-2025 US News & World Report rankings, the institution was placed on the Honor Roll of the top 20 hospitals in the country. It also secured the No. 1 spot in neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonology, and lung surgery, while ranking second in cardiology, heart surgery, and vascular surgery.

A Commitment to the Future

Dr. Kimmelman steps into his new role at a pivotal time for NYU Langone, inheriting a legacy of innovation, patient care excellence, and groundbreaking medical research. With a deep commitment to academic medicine, he is set to lead the institution into its next chapter of growth and scientific advancement.

As NYU Langone continues its trajectory as a leading healthcare system, the appointment of Dr. Kimmelman marks a significant milestone, promising a future of continued excellence in patient care, education, and research.
