Jessica Ramos, No-Nonsense State Senator from Queens, Joins NYC Mayoral Race

State Senator Jessica Ramos Enters the 2025 NYC Mayoral Race, Promising Bold Leadership for Working-Class New Yorkers Amidst Political Uncertainty

First woman and second Latino candidate aims to challenge Mayor Eric Adams amid political turmoil.

State Senator Jessica Ramos, a well-known advocate for labor rights and progressive policies, has officially declared her candidacy for mayor of New York City. The seasoned lawmaker and community advocate from Queens enters an increasingly crowded primary field, becoming the only woman and second Latino contender in the race.

Ramos, chair of the influential Labor Committee in the Senate, has built her political career on fighting for workers’ rights and immigrant communities, causes that have shaped her leadership. This Labor Day Parade, a familiar event for Ramos, was different from the others she’s participated in over the years. As she marched down Fifth Avenue, the latest federal investigation into the administration of incumbent Mayor Eric Adams loomed large. However, her own plans to challenge Adams remained unannounced until now.

Campaign Launch: Time for a New Vision for NYC

At a recent event, Ramos revealed the frustration driving her decision to run. “Aren’t you tired of this? I think we all are,” she remarked, referring to the current state of city leadership. Citing a need for effective governance, Ramos is positioning herself as the unifying candidate for working-class New Yorkers, especially those from immigrant backgrounds.

“A woman, a Latina, a mother from Queens—that’s who I am,” said Ramos, sharing her motivation. “I want a city with a vision, where my parents could retire comfortably, my kids can grow up safely, and everyone can access the services they need.”

While her campaign is driven by a deep connection to her community and a record of championing worker’s rights, Ramos acknowledges the challenge ahead. The race for mayor is not for the faint-hearted, and ousting an incumbent like Adams is no easy task. Nonetheless, Ramos sees the current political landscape—marked by investigations into Adams’ administration—as an opening for change.

Ramos’ Reputation: A Tough, Progressive Voice

Ramos rose to political prominence by unseating a moderate Democrat in 2018, running as an insurgent candidate supported by the Working Families Party. Since then, she has developed a reputation as a determined lawmaker, unafraid to tackle tough issues. She has spearheaded significant labor reforms, including securing unemployment for non-traditional workers and passing protections for domestic and farm workers.

Despite her progressive achievements, Ramos faces the challenge of broadening her appeal beyond her core base. Her outspokenness and blunt style have earned her both respect and criticism, and some question whether her left-leaning policies could alienate voters. However, Ramos remains undeterred, confident that her advocacy for affordable child care, expanded education funding, and compassionate immigration policies will resonate with working-class New Yorkers.

Adams’ Vulnerability and the 2025 Challenge

With several federal investigations swirling around Mayor Adams and his closest advisors, Ramos believes the 2025 mayoral election offers an opportunity for real change. Adams, who has faced increasing scrutiny over budget cuts, the migrant crisis, and allegations of corruption, will likely face a tough primary battle. However, defeating an incumbent mayor in New York City remains a formidable challenge—something that hasn’t been done since Rudy Giuliani’s win over David Dinkins in 1993.

Despite the odds, Ramos isn’t deterred. “We can’t wait another four years to see where the consequences of inaction take us,” she said, describing her vision for more progressive and effective city governance.

Labor Support and Campaign Strategy

Ramos has deep roots in New York’s labor movement, a relationship she hopes will bolster her campaign. Before entering politics, she worked with several major unions, including 32BJ SEIU and the social service employees union, SSEU Local 371. Her record in the Senate has solidified her as a champion for workers’ rights, making her a natural candidate for union support. However, it remains to be seen whether major unions will back her over Adams, who has maintained strong relationships with key labor groups.

Fundraising will also be a critical factor. While Ramos has taken a grassroots approach to fundraising in the past, she acknowledges the need for significant financial support to mount a viable challenge. Adams, by contrast, has already amassed a considerable war chest ahead of the election.

Navigating the Progressive Field

As the field of progressive candidates begins to take shape, Ramos is one of several challengers looking to unseat Adams. The possibility of a divided progressive vote looms large, with other potential candidates like city Comptroller Brad Lander and state Senator Zellnor Myrie also gaining attention.

Working Families Party co-director Ana María Archila emphasized the importance of unity to avoid a repeat of the 2021 primary, where progressives split their vote. Ramos, while historically backed by the party, has downplayed labels, describing herself as a “Queens labor Democrat.” She has signaled that her focus is on connecting with working-class New Yorkers across the political spectrum.

Outlook: Building a Movement

Ramos knows she faces an uphill battle, but she remains undeterred. Her commitment to grassroots organizing and her extensive legislative record could help her make a strong case to voters. As the only woman in the race and a Latina with deep community ties, Ramos offers a unique perspective that could draw support from a diverse coalition of New Yorkers.

Whether she can galvanize the city’s labor movement, secure key endorsements, and overcome the financial might of the Adams campaign will be crucial in determining her chances. For now, Ramos is focused on building momentum for her campaign, confident in the belief that her vision for a more equitable, compassionate, and effective New York City will resonate with voters.

“The work is real, and the fight is real,” Ramos said. “I’m ready to take this on.”
