Walmart to Cut Hundreds of Jobs, Close Office Amid Corporate Relocation Push

Retail Giant Reshapes Workforce Strategy, Encouraging Employees to Move to Main Hubs

Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, is eliminating hundreds of roles and closing an office in North Carolina as part of an ongoing corporate restructuring initiative. The move, revealed in an internal memo obtained by FOX Business on Tuesday, is part of Walmart’s broader strategy to consolidate its workforce into key operational hubs in California and Arkansas.

Chief People Officer Donna Morris outlined the changes, stating that employees in Hoboken, NJ, and several smaller offices are being asked to relocate to Walmart’s new headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., or its office in Sunnyvale, Calif.

“We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding,” Morris said in the memo. “Through this review process, we have eliminated some roles as we streamline how we work.”

While Walmart did not disclose the exact number of employees affected, those asked to relocate will have at least a month to decide whether to move to the company’s main hubs.

A Strategic Shift in Corporate Operations

This latest wave of job cuts and relocations follows a broader strategy unveiled in May 2024, when Walmart began shifting employees from offices in Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto to its corporate headquarters in Bentonville, its Hoboken office, or its California location. Remote employees were also instructed to return to in-office work as part of this initiative.

Since February 2022, Walmart has required workers to return to physical offices, citing benefits such as improved collaboration, innovation, and efficiency. In alignment with this vision, the company has invested heavily in new office spaces, including a newly opened 350-acre campus in Bentonville. This state-of-the-art facility, featuring 12 office buildings, amenity spaces, and parking structures, is designed to foster teamwork and enhance company culture.

Additionally, Walmart is expanding its presence in key locations, including new offices in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Bellevue, Wash., while enlarging its Hoboken office and maintaining its fashion office in New York City.

Navigating Workforce Transition

Morris emphasized that Walmart’s corporate culture thrives on in-person collaboration. “Our values and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together,” she stated. “We’ve already seen the benefits of having more teams working together in person, and today we are sharing another step that will help accelerate our momentum.”

To support affected employees, Walmart has committed to providing relocation assistance or severance packages for those who choose not to move.

As Walmart continues to realign its workforce, the company remains focused on efficiency and corporate synergy, ensuring that its employees work in strategically positioned locations that drive long-term growth and innovation.
